With the remake of Resident Evil 4 having arrived late last month, it’s a great time to be a horror game buff in search of something to play with the lights off and scare yourself silly.

Some of these fearless fans have simply set the game to the highest difficulty possible, picked out their favourite weapon and set off on a quest to achieve 100% completion, but others are already seeking out interesting ways to spice up their playthroughs.

One way to achieve this is by downloading mods, which can add the likes of Thomas the Tank Engine, the Super Mario brothers or even a mouse version of Ashley to the game, or, in the case of a new work that’s just arrived on the Nexus, fill enemies with more bloodlust than ever before.

Have you ever wished the Resident Evil 4 Remake’s battles were a little bit more frenetic and challenging?

The mod in question is called ‘Relentless Enemies’ and is the work of modder alphaZomega. Some of their previous projects have brought Leon some evasive dodge rolls and the ability to kick doors open in true action hero style.

This time, they’ve developed a script designed to “work as a counter-balance” to mods like those two, which can make things easier for players who master them, possibly blunting the difficulty curve that makes playing the game exhilarating for those who know its story beats off by heart.

It does so by giving all of the enemies you’ll encounter as you explore the cultist-filled depths of rural Spain “permission to attack at all times”, with alphaZomega emphasising: “They will attack from off-screen, will attack repeatedly, and will attack while others are already attacking.”

While these changes will up the danger factor of any battles you get into, they’re seemingly most noticeable during fights against larger groups of enemies, with these gangs now doing a better job of surrounding you and making scuffles in tight spaces a lot more claustrophobia-inducing.

If you’re up for a true challenge, you can even take on the game’s Mercenaries Mode with the mod installed, with a few comments suggesting that it makes going on point-based killing sprees a lot more exhilarating.

Though, you’ll first need to grab praydog2’s ‘REFramework’ and FluffyQuack’s ‘Fluffy Mod Manager’ in order to get things up and running.
